Gareth Southgate took charge of the England men's team in 2016 during one of the most challenging periods in its history, and guided the country through its most successful era since 1966.
His side reached back-to-back UEFA European Championship finals and the semi-finals and quarter-finals of successive FIFA World Cups. Rebuilding the team’s identity from the ground up, he made the “impossible job” possible, winning more major tournament matches than any other England manager in history. As a player and manager, he has represented England more times than anyone else in history, and as a player he captained all three clubs he represented (Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough), playing more than 500 games. Knighted for services to football, he is one of the most trusted national figures in the UK.
Since stepping down in 2024, and alongside 1071 Media, Gareth has built GS Ventures, a purpose-driven business founded on his values and experience, encompassing speaking, partnerships, media, investment and social purpose. He is a sought-after voice on leadership: his time with England has been studied by Harvard Business School, and his book Dear England: Lessons in Leadership was named by The Sunday Times as one of the best books of 2025. A champion of young people, he followed his 2025 Richard Dimbleby Lecture with the acclaimed BBC documentary Changing the Game for Young Men, and in 2027 will launch a major national mentoring initiative with the King’s Trust, a charity he has served as an ambassador for 15 years.
Jimmy founded Leaders in Sport in 2007, the premium conference and networking business in global sport, before selling it to Advance Publications in 2022, remaining as Chair until 2024.
Since then he has been running GS Ventures, the company overseeing Gareth Southgate’s commercial, marketing and purpose-driven interests, becoming Chair of the business in 2026.
Before Leaders, he held various senior roles in sport, including Head of Business Development at The Football Association, Commercial Director at Bristol City and Associate at ENIC plc.
Jimmy has advised some of the biggest brands and names in sport and is an active investor in sport-related businesses, including Alpine F1 and Game4Padel. As an Evertonian, he supports the award-winning Everton in the Community, where he helped launch the world’s first digital learning centre and was named its Fundraiser of the Year in 2024. He holds an MBA (Football Industries) from the University of Liverpool.
